Fashion

Granted I’m not aware of everything that happens in fashion, but I could not believe I missed the exciting news of H&M group starting a new store concept with the title & other Stories. So when my sister-in-law told me and emphasized their style was great and I would love it I was eager to find out and checked the website. I did love what I found! What luck then, I was to go to London where they have a store on Regent Street! & other Stories just fills the gap in style between H&M and their low prized casual day-to-day style and the minimalistic Scandinavian feel of COS. & other Stories just fits in perfectly, it’s classy, playful and colorful and lets you create your personal style from shoes to make-up, BAGS!!! and lingerie. Everything is of high quality but affordable, although more expensive than H&M.  It’s a definite must-see and the great news is they ship to Holland with low shipping costs (6 euro).

Since I really saw a lot in London and I’d love to share it all I’ve decided to post more frequently the coming weeks. While we were in Harrods which was like a shopping heaven (for those who can call themselves Big Spenders) and makes our department store De Bijenkorf seem like a baby, we stumbled upon a Dior exhibition. Imagine finding the dress Charlize Theron wore in the J’ adore commercial and more recently the one Natalie Portman wore in Miss Dior. It was pure chance we got to see it since it ended the very next day (but just so you know I don’t believe in chance).wk6diorimageupdateddior at harrodsdior in harrods iidior in harrods iiidior in harrods ivdior in harrods vdior in harrods vi

O dear, it’s been way to long since the last Kindred Spirits interview! But luckily I have a really nice one for you now! As you may know it’s been almost a year since we moved to the cutest town in Holland and one of the clothing stores in particular stood out for me even before I moved here. It’s called Trade Studio and it has the most beautiful Scandinavian brands. I asked the owner Karen Staal some questions and she was nice enough to answer them for me and I’m really proud to have my Trade Studio closet photographed. You can check it out here. For those of you who are planning a visit to my dear city do make sure to visit!

What kind of shop is Trade Studio?

Trade studio is a light boutique in Haarlem in the area HoutZuid. The basis of the collections lies with classics and timeless pieces, that are enhanced with a considerable amount of Scandinavian style. Many of our labels come from Denmark and surprise us again and again with their simple beauty. Next to that personal advice is key, we gladly search for a style that really represents the individual.

How long have you been owner and what is your background?

I’ve been owner of the store for nearly two years now. Before that the it was owned by Lone Sorensen, she started the store almost 32 years ago. About 5 years ago I came to work for Lone as a weekend help and from there I grew to being a company leader for Saint Tropez during my studies Small business and Retail Management. Which I eventually never finished because I thought working in a store was so much more fun, and suddenly I was 21 and the new owner of Trade Studio.

 What are your favorite brands and why?

Jeez, that is a hard one. During my rounds of purchases I try everything on myself and I really choose only the things I really like. So there is nothing in the store that I wouldn’t wear myself. But if I would really have to choose than Won Hundred and Graumann are my favorites at the moment. Such beautiful fabrics, ladylike, elegant and tough.

What are the trends for the coming summer and fall?

For this spring I especially like the trend with the printed trousers combined with the sweaters that are coming into style and that are not just to wear to the gym any more. With that the suite (blazer with baggy pantalon) is still a favorite and every year I fall for another color or a slightly different kind off material.

Do you have any good tips on how to maintain a good selection of items in your wardrobe?

Invest in a couple of good quality basics. They are the least favorite thing to buy but the most essential to have in your closet. You can always fall back on them and you can create a new outfit with them time and again that fits your ‘mood’ . With a couple of sneakers and a large vest for instance, and the other time with a pair of heels and a blazer. With that you can give it a nice twist with a nice belt or a beautiful scarf.

What are your plans for the future?

I have a lot of plans sometimes a little too many I think. For now we are very busy with the webshop that will go online in April with the new spring collection. And next to that I’m already secretly dreaming about a second store…

{Trade Studio can be found in the Grote Houtstraat 152  / Haarlem. There is a saving system you can join which gives you a discount of 8% on your purchases}

{For all you Dutch and Belgian readers: don’t forget to join my TimeCapsule giveaway which ends on the 1st of April}

I discovered the brand SUNO in the January/ February issue of Frankie magazine. I just love their use of color, the loose beautiful silky fabrics and their feminine style. Behind the brand of SUNO lies an interesting and fair story:

SUNO is a New York based womenswear label founded in 2008 by Max Osterweis in collaboration with designer Erin Beatty. The collection was launched in Spring 2009 after post-election violence threatened to damage the economy and industry in Kenya, a long time second home to Osterweis. Using vintage Kenyan textiles that Osterweis had been collecting for years, they created their first small collection, produced predominantly in Kenya. Since its inception, SUNO has evolved its business to include production in Kenya, India, Peru and its home base of New York. Via a combination of traditional, local techniques and high-end tailoring, as well as an emphasis on fit and fabric, SUNO is able to offer a global, unique view of the luxury world in an accessible way. SUNO currently offers a jewelry collaboration with Pamela Love, as well as a capsule footwear collection with Nicholas Kirkwood shoes, incorporating the unique prints and fabrics of the collection into each design to maintain the same optimistic, fresh, and slightly haunting point of view across all lines.”

Remember when I went to the Modefabriek? I was mostly inspired by MINT, but I did come across some brands I did not know yet. One of the stands that caught my eye in the section Refined+ was a very colorful one that seemed out of place because of its exotic and free spirited nature. The women’s clothes were all very beautiful, mostly dresses and skirts. I took a catalogue with me and was pleasantly surprised when I flipped through it back home. It had the most beautiful photo’s, of course with beautiful clothes, but the decor and feel of the campaign truly is fantastic. A lot of attention to detail went into it and as you may well know it’s all in the details. I wanted to share some of that beautiful catalogue with you, if you want to see it whole you can find it online here. The brand is Lena Hoscheck, an upmarket women fashion label from Austria. I suspect this catalogue will become a collectors-item. It’s really that great!

Since I’m not a professional photographer this is the best I could do without losing the contrast in the photo’s that made the campaign so beautiful. For the real sharpness and bright color please visit the digital catalogue, but the matt paper did give the photo’s some sort of vintage contrast I tried to honor here -and which is lost digitally (did I mention I have this thing for paper?) If you have any tips on maintaining both vintage feel and increase light I would love to know }

Last monday I went to the January edition of the Modefabriek in Amsterdam. I have been fortunate enough to attend the last two editions too, so by now I have a pretty good idea which areas I have to check out. I have to see MINT  (with ambassador Egbert-Jan Weeber) of course and another area called Trash and Treasures which is pretty cool and a little bit edgy. I like the fair, clean and hip environment of MINT. Actually maybe it’s even my most favorite part of the fair. But I have to say I also get really inspired by the ‘Garage Sale Extraordinare’ where thirty sellers are handpicked to showcase (and sell!!) their handmade, vintage or young designer fashion and accessories. For me the Modefabriek was all about the details this edition. So lots of accessories and small details that caught my eye. I have posted some pics on Instagram too and will highlight some new brands the coming weeks.

Whenever I’m in Amsterdam I try to squeeze in as much quality shops in the (often) limited time I have. Every time I try to cover one particular area, such as the Pijp or Noord or center. I usually know exactly what stores I want to see and in most cases there even is a time plan involved. You could say I’m a little bit neurotic that way. The funny thing is I usually don’t prepare at all whenever I go and visit a foreign city. Foreign cities and their unknown treasures, the enormous quantity of must-see shops: they have a way of paralyzing me. “There is no way to see everything so I might as well just go and see what pops up.” is usually my city trip or vacation attitude. Since I had plenty of time to get to know Amsterdam (I was born and raised in Amstelveen which is kind of its suburb) I have conquered the paralysis as far as this city is concerned. I know it inside out (like my back pocket as we Dutch folk say). Last Saturday I went to Restored on the Haarlemmerdijk, a shop I wanted to see for ages (I already am a regular visitor of their webshop). Do make sure to visit if you’re in the neighborhood; that’s the good part me already selecting a couple of must-see shops in Amsterdam so you won’t wander aimlessly (as I’m prone to do abroad…). Restored is a beautiful shop selling handmade design, interiorstuff, bags, jewellery, fashion, gifts, ceramics and books. Well, you will just have to buy everything when you go there.

Whilst browsing the internet I stumbled upon the beautiful colorful clothes by Mara Hoffman (she has a sale going on!). I love small independent labels, they just are so much more personal. Whilst researching her I saw these pictures of her fall collection 2012. Okay, so they are last year, but they are so beautiful! I couldn’t find a more recent campaign (except the one of the swimwear collection), but I do hope she will make more. I like this campaign, it’s abstract colorful and a bit dark and sinister with the crows (they symbolize death you know). I think it nicely represents those two sides in our personality: the sweet versus the mysterious. She makes amazing pieces! Please do make sure to follow her boards on Pinterest or follow her on Facebook. Fan!

November already and it’s getting really chilly and dark outside. I don’t know about you, but I’m beginning to miss the sun… November gets me thinking about wooden cabins and a burning fire, warm sweaters and hot chocolate… Is it Christmas yet?
